Hilarious memes to celebrate Brexit Christmas cracker joke voted best of the year

A GAG about Brussels sprouts being missing from this year's Christmas dinner post-Brexit has been voted as the funniest cracker joke.

While the winning joke was centred on one of the biggest subjects of the year, other topics such as Sports Direct, Roy Hodgson and Jeremy Corbyn were also covered.

Mock-ups of former UKIP leader Nigel Farage spurning a bowl of sprouts, pictures of the veggies and EU flags and memes of people rolling their eyes immediately popped up all over social media.

Brexit supporters were clear fans of the joke, with people retweeting it accompanied by laughing emojis.

David Wood tweeted: "No Brussels - thank God! Nobody needs these FARTING MACHINES."

Others were less impressed, with one person writing: "How will Christmas dinner by different this year after Brexit?

"We'll spend it staring at our elders in contempt/despair. And no Brussels."

People were asked to write their own jokes as part of a competition to write the best modern festive cracker joke.

It was part of a poll for TV comedy channel Gold.

The winner who came up with the top joke which got 20 per cent of the vote, is Laura McDonnell who received a £1,500 holiday voucher for her efforts.

She submitted: "How will Christmas dinner by different after Brexit? No Brussels."

And Laura, a 27-year-old NHS project support worker from Edinburgh, said her comedic talent stems from her grandfather Ron, who wrote jokes for Morecambe and Wise.

She said: "My grandad, Ron McDonnell, used to be a comedy writer with the BBC, writing for the likes of Morecambe and Wise so I really got the interest from him and thought I would enter a few jokes.

"I've entered the competition for about three years now, so didn't think I would ever win.

"I'm still in shock, it's great news.

"Maybe one day I'll pursue a career in comedy, never say never, if my dad heard me say that though, he would probably laugh."

Critic Bruce Dessau, who headed the judging panel, said: “One thing the British will always be good at is finding the funny side to almost any situation, and it’s no surprise that Brexit featured as one of the dominant topics of this year’s jokes.

“But it wasn’t all about the EU – there were lots of cracking gags, with this year’s news about Sports Direct, BHS and Bake Off also featuring in winning one-liners - all of which will hopefully get the Great British public laughing their socks off, as well as being the perfect way to launch the series of Christmas specials on Gold.”

Entries were submitted via Twitter and shortlisted by a panel of judges before being put to a public vote of 2,000 British adults.

The top six jokes are included in bespoke boxes of Christmas Gold crackers, which were presented to this year’s winners.
